I was lucky to be able to do what I love
An interview with Natalia Zaidova (Kay)
Biography
Born in Moscow on November 2, 1987.
Graduated from the MSUPA of Fedorov.
Worked for NARR8 for a year (during her 6th year at the University) as a colourist.
Working for Bubble since the end of 2014.
Worked as an artist for the "Demonslayer" and "The Time of the Raven" series, currently the lead artist behind "Igor Grom".
When did you start drawing?

Picked up a pencil when I was 3 and it became my favourite object and toy ever since. Up until the age of 14, I mainly drew animals and Disney characters. After 14 I started drawing humans. I seriously got into it at around 12, drawing practically every day save for rare cases of art block that would last a week at most.

What materials and programs do you use for drawing?

I do my sketches using a mechanical pencil with a 0.5 2B lead or a Micron, Edding, and Faber-Castell Ecco Pigment liner, usually a 0.2-0.4 mm. In digital I use SAI for the drawing itself and Photoshop for correction/effects.

I use a Wacom Intuos Pro M tablet at home and a Cintiq 22 in the office.

Did you dream of becoming an artist as a child?

The dream has always been there, probably, since the age of 5.
I was lucky to be able to do what I love and I wouldn't change my profession to anything else.
Is it hard, working as an artist?

There are pros and cons to any job, I think. I was lucky to be able to do what I love and I wouldn't change my profession to anything else, but it can be hard. Artistic occupations take up a lot of time and energy, both physical and mental, so you have to be prepared for such exhaustion.

What Bubble series would you most like to work on?

"Demonslayer" has always drawn me in, although I believe that Phobs (Anastasia Kim — editor's note) makes the series absolutely perfectly and the whole creative team works so smoothly. Still, I would like to be a part of that story, even once in a while. Mysticism, the supernatural and action have always fascinated me. "Realmwalkers" would be interesting too. I think this series has a rich selection of themes and genres, and because of the specifics of the story you could implement just about any plot you'd be interested in.

Which character from the Bubble universe appeals to you the most?

Danila from "Demonslayer" has always been and remains my favourite character. For me, he is the perfect mix of power, character, charisma and looks.
Any plans for personal projects that could be published through Bubble Visions?

There are always plans and they always will be, what's important is finding the time and energy. But I don't like talking about things that don't yet exist.

Кто тебя вдохновляет? На кого ты равняешься?

Throughout my life, I have had a ton of artist that inspired me. I enjoy a variety of styles: from Leyendecker's academic retro illustrations to Disney's full stylisation, from American comics to animation and manga.

I'll try to name just a few from different genres. It's not everyone, obviously, otherwise you'd have to print several volumes worth of names.

Western artists: Greg Capullo, Stuart Immonen, Sean Gordon Murphy, Jo Madureira, James Harren, Samuel Silva, Jorge Jimenez, Sara Pichelli.

Mangakas: Miwa Shirow, Boichi (Mujik Park), Takeshi Obata, Minekura Kazuya.

Animators: Don Bluth, Chris Sanders, Jin Kim, Glen Keane.

And a ton of other people who have blogs on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, that periodically disappear, change nicknames, work as freelance artists or just draw for themselves, they all inspire me just as much.

Again, this is just a drop in the ocean. There are many. The folder on my computer that contains around 75% of all the stuff that has touched me in one way or another weighs 25 GB.

Tell us about your favourite fandoms.

Throughout my life I have been in so many fandoms you could write a book about it, and of course, they constantly change. I get bored of one thing and something new appears, so I'll only talk about the ones that lasted for more than 5 years.

Doctor Who. I will always love this franchise for its incredible stories, for its staunch and simple belief in goodness, for the amazingly charismatic characters. And of course, for the action, the humour, and the showmanship, obviously :))

Sherlock Holmes. I like both our screen adaptation and the new British series. The American films weren't bad either. There are many other versions, old and new, the sherlockmania is mainstream these days, nevertheless, the story of an eccentric detective and his faithful partner will forever be in my heart :)

Hannibal. Just yesterday I re-watched the entire trilogy. At one point "The Silence of the Lambs" became a sort of a cinematic revelation. And, of course, Fuller has worked hard and breathed new life into the fandom.

Do you have any hobbies besides drawing?

I like photography, cycling, and travelling. Then again, who doesn't? :)
